A UGC testimonial ad is a short, phone-style video in which a customer talks about a product they actually use. It feels like a recommendation from a friend rather than a commercial, which is why it is one of the most copied formats in paid social.
This template suits direct-to-consumer brands, subscription products and apps that already have customers willing to appear on camera with written consent. If you do not have that footage, the honest alternative is an AI virtual host that does not correspond to any real person, clearly presented as such.
Shot-by-shot structure
| Time | Shot | On-screen text | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–2s | Selfie close-up, product in hand | “I didn’t expect this to work” | Hook: personal surprise |
| 2–5s | Medium shot at home | The problem in five words | Make the pain relatable |
| 5–9s | Product close-up, hands demonstrating | Key feature caption | Show, not tell |
| 9–12s | Back to selfie, natural reaction | What changed for them | Specific, provable result |
| 12–15s | Product on table with logo | Offer or call to action | Clear next step |
What to keep vs change in Clone Cut
| Keep unchanged | Change |
|---|---|
| The customer on screen, unchanged | Product shown in the close-ups |
| Their own words and voice | Logo and end card |
| Hook timing and the selfie framing | Background of the product shots |
| On-screen captions and call to action |
Existing people in your reference stay unchanged. Edits are limited to products, objects, backgrounds, logos and text.
Assets you need
- Testimonial footage with a signed release from the customer
- Three or more product photos from different angles
- Transparent PNG logo
- The exact quote you are allowed to use
Sample brief
Recreate the structure of my licensed testimonial clip. Keep the customer and their voice unchanged. Use my product photos for the close-up at 5–9 seconds and my logo on the end card. Captions: “Finally, a bottle that doesn’t leak” and “Shop the 24 oz”. Keep the selfie framing and pacing of the reference. Plain white background for the product shots.
Adapt the product name, captions and timings to your own reference. Our UGC ad brief template explains how to describe each shot.
Compliance notes
- Only use testimonials from real customers who agreed in writing, or label the presenter as an AI virtual host.
- Never write a testimonial for someone or put words in their mouth.
- Disclose any payment or free product given to the person in the video where the rules require it.
Make only claims you can prove, disclose AI-generated content where the platform or law requires it, and never publish fake testimonials or endorsements.
